In Response To: heaving to vs irons (Tom T. House)

In a cat, being in irons is pretty much the same thing. You will remain stable while slowly drifting aft.(at least for a while-- until a swell pushes you to one side or the other) In a monohull sloop, back-winding the jib and light power on main with the rudder to lewward will accomplish the same thing. It is the only way to keep from turning/swinging from side to side. IMHO
