Norther's

While we do have some sailing experience we were sea kayaking on our recent trip to Baja and the Sea of Cortez. The information I found on this message board regarding northers was very helpful.

We paddled from Bahia san luis Gonzaga to Bahia de los Angeles. Rolling in to Calamjue we experienced north swells as well as during the next day. But they were never too big to handle in a sea kayak landing on a sand beach.

We did see the mare's tails clouds and learned (via sat. phone) that the Santa Anna's had kicked up. Sure enough, our third day out we were 'trapped' on shore due to the heavy swell and high winds.

We had even seen a sail boat heading toward Bahia de los Angeles from the north end of Angel de la Guarda the day before the wind really hit. Should have told us something.

But we were safe on shore with plenty of water and enough food to get by. We waited three days before we took our chances to get off the beach through the lightening breakers.

This photo hardly captures the size of the waves breaking on the beach - this was on the leeward side of our protected point and the norther waves (more like north north west) were refracting around the corner and were still this size!

anyway, a fun time ...
