Bringing boat down. Coming back with empty trailer

Report: outside forum guidelines

I want to bring a friends small sailboat down to Mexico. I intend to use my trailer and truck. The Truck and trailer are in my name, the Boat is in his name. He will be with me. He intends to cruise south and depart Mexico for the South Seas after several months.
We want to Launch in the Sea of Cortez as far north as possible. After launching, I will return to Los Angeles with my empty trailer and truck. He will head south.
Which place is best and what paperwork would I need.
