good choice.

your desired adventure of crossing is not un-do-able in your boat but getting some experience on the sea of cortez first is smart.

since your boat is not made for ocean conditions, you're better off crossing in flat seas... which means almost no winds... and mostly motorsailing.

nothing wrong with that. it just means being careful in picking your weather window.

having some experience in the rough stuff is still important though. things can change quickly out there.

i've crossed in a macgregor 25 with a venture 22 along side of me... weather was good... lots of motoring... fog too. you need to be able to steer a blind gps course if you get in the fog.
