bob-
i really can't answer your question without knowing your knowledge and skill level for such an adventure.
do this...
1) go to the search page here:
http://bbs.trailersailor.com/search.html
2) then click the "None" button at the bottom of the page to clear the check marks.
3) then check the "Sea of Cortez Archive" box under the "Forum Archive" column.
4) then type "crossing sea" in the keywords box with "Search for ALL" and "Exclude Author's Name" as the search paramaters for your keywords.
5) you should come up with 152 matching posts. READ ALL OF THEM!
this should answer most of your questions and give you a real good idea of whether you're ready for the trip or if you need to do some research and maybe some local sailing around san carlos before attempting a crossing in your mac/venture 25.
i made four trips to san carlos gaining local sailing experience and spent three years researching what i should know before making the first crossing in my mac 25. i also had extensive navigational, meterological, and radio communication skills from being a pilot and flight instructor in my earlier years.
i've made four quite pleasant crossings in 25 foot boats... but i did a LOT of homework and i chose benign, 3 day, "low winds, small waves" weather windows for the crossings.
fun, fun, fun... as long as you don't exceed your own limitations.
the reasearching, planning and learning was as fun as the crossings.
gopher it!!
