Confusion over leaving boat in Mexico

My impression is that temporary vehicle import permits are of the same duration as visas (i.e. short). And that you must have one for boat, trailer, and van to leave these things in Mexico awaiting your return to do some more sailing. Also, that you must travel to the border to renew them.

I must be wrong about this, though, because boats and trailers and, I imagine, trucks and RVs and such, are left in Mexico for longer periods of time.

Since I'm leaving very soon for Mexico, I'd like to clear this up: How do I safely leave my truck, trailer and van in Mexico for longer than six months? What permits do I need.

Sanctuary much for any help-- all assistance appreciated.
