i travel to Mexico, solo, every month for fishing & camping trips, mostly in the San Carlos area or between there and Kino. i camp on the beach by myself. i drive at night (i do have lots of aux Hellas on the front of truck so i don't overdrive my headlights). IOW, i ignore nearly all of the State Dept's admonitions except i do stay out of bad areas, esp border towns, at night. and my rig, a 2002 Taco with Portabote on top, doesn't scream "wealth".
i have never been hassled, felt nervous for my safety, been stopped by cops, or had any problems beyond minor pilferage of items left in my rowboat overnight (one oar and a clamp-on running light). I agree 100% with the posters who feel that Mexico is far safer and less violent than the US. in the San carlos area, it's even more so due to the "sheltered gringo enclave" aspect, altho there has been a lot of theft there recently. come on down, fear not, but maybe lock up your valuables.
FWIW, this is coming from person who's worked in public defender offices for 20+ yrs and totes a 9mm with 17 rounds of ugly antipersonnel fragmenting ammo whenever he travels in the US...i'm not Pollyanna
