This is a great and important topic... Like everyone here has noted trash is a big deal in the Sea. As another example: The landfill at El Golfo de Santa Clara is probably only 500m from the shoreline. Since the trash at the fill is not covered on a regular basis the prevailing winds blow the trash across the road and magnificent desert and into the Sea. Such a sad tragedy. It seems that education through persistence, repetition and example (showing the benefits along the way) may be the only way to change a person’s view and subsequent actions. Also, I guess, if tourism $ could help pay for proper landfill operations...
I know that in some ways the word 'sustainability' has become cliché, but for everyone, Mexicans and other world citizens alike, if the connection could be made in a way that becomes a personal realization - the connection between healthy diverse and evolving ecosystems - then at that point things might change. In the mean time, I guess, lead by example with positive reinforcement...
