I also find the same thing you described. The GPS's internal mapping system places the target destination at a different place than it actually is.

I've even found some charts that have been quite poor.

That's one of the reasons: I sail when I can see; I often use actual GPS coordinates I've gotten myself on past trips and/or I get coordinates from folks I know and trust and who have actually verified the coordinates themselves....

Even then it is still better to sail when I can actually see and verify with my own eyes and depth sounder, etc.
