Passports are NOW required for driving to Mexico!
As of June 1, 2009, you will need a Passport or Passport Card to cross back into the US from Mexico.
Acceptable ID for US Citizens crossing the border from Mexico back into the US include the following:

Children under the age of 16 may use an ordinal birth certificate instead of a passport.
