Memorial Day Wishes To All…

by Gary "Doc" Hansen

Many “holidays” get lost… or caught up in the festivities of time off work, and family outings… So, first off I want to give my SINCERE THANKS to all the members of the Armed Forces that have served this GREAT COUNTRY in which we live. I don’t know of anyone living here today, that don’t owe our Service Personnel… past, present and future, for the QUALITY of life that we are BLESSED WITH. The saying rings true; “FREEDOM IS NOT FREE”… My Thanks goes out heartfelt.

Memorial Day also “kicks off” the summer… and with that, the lakes and waters we all sail in, will become crowded with lots of “engine driven” craft. Although this is contrary to our wind powered boats, we must share the space. We must also take more CARE in the operation of OUR BOATS when mixed into the same waters as the “hi-powered crowd”. It can really become a dangerous situation out there… with boat traffic all moving around in different directions and different speeds… and not to mention the EXCESSIVE use of alcohol in some cases.

PLEASE… take the responsibility for making sure WE SAILORS don’t forget SAFETY… That responsibility IS NOT on the OTHER GUY… it’s YOUR CALL… so make it happen and do all you can to insure that your boat, your crew, and your group does all they can to make this Memorial Weekend… and Summer Season as SAFE AS YOU CAN MAKE IT.

Enjoy the life… we have been given.
