I cruised the area and participated in several Chicago Mac Races. The Straits can be very dangerous, due the convergence of Lake Michigan and Lake Huron and the influences from Lake Superior. Watch the surface currents. I once sailed west from Mackinaw Island in a fog. I never saw any part of the bridge, just heard the traffic above as I passed under. I suggest you trailer and visit Lake Charievoix. Boyne City is nice as is Charevouix. Petosky is grand. With a fair wind and calm water you can shoot across to Beaver Island. Taverse Bay is also very nice with several desitnations close by. I just remember Mackinaw Island as a stopping point as I headed for the North Channel, Isle Royale or either coast of Lake Michagan. Have a great time.
PS Your inquiry brought back some great memories. The tallest girl behind the wheel(my oldest daughter) will be teaching in the Physics Dept @ Cast Western Reserve University this fall. Photo was taken about twenty years ago. My Pearson 365 ketch - no gaff - grand having old photos to look back upon.
