Hi Rick, My tastes run more to the Friendship Sloop style gaffer. I built this one 6 years ago. She's not a true replica as she has a planing hull; however, as Stephen says it is just right for shallow waters. NW Florida has a large share of that too. The apeal for me it the traditional design and skills too sail them. They don't point as high as a marconi rig and are a bit slower. That said in many cases a gaff rig will travel farther but reach the same position at the same time as a matched burmuda rig. The gaffer falls off a bit and goes like hell. They are quite easy to sail and are very forgiving of the masters mistakes. The net holds many sites devoted to building these boats as well as commercial versions forsale. I have sailed both types and I'll never go back after this gaff rig! Take a look at these two sites:
