I have not actually prevented it by any means other than not capsizing (which works pretty well), but if I'm going out in conditions where it would be particularly bad (by myself on cold water), I sometimes tie a PFD to the main halyard. Tends to hang up on the spreaders a bit, but gives you a bit more flotation with a lot of leverage. The foam pad in the top of the mainsail doesn't work, incidentally . I have a line tied to the mast which I have used, with assistance from a powerboat, to right the boat. I'm planning to replace it with a slightly longer one and maybe add a knot or two for better grip to see if that would help as far as righting without a powerboat--I have a pretty hard time getting on top of the boat at all, and then I'm too tired to stand up on the gunwale and hang onto the line for very long, I find. Something about being in the water without planning to is very tiring .
