I like your idea of extending the sleeve slightly out both sides of the mast, that way the rod won't move around in the oversized, worn holes. Is it really just a pressure fit that keeps the sleeve in place or do I need to reinforce somehow? I also like your idea of using a couple set screws to hold the rod in place. My sleeve's wall is only 1/16" thick (1/2" OD) but it may hold with some Locktite on the 32 treads per inch screw...but then again, it's only two threads thick.
