Tiller Extension Length?

I need to purchase a new tiller extension and was wondering if anyone has specific recommendations on length. Would it be better to go a bit shorter than the original - say 30'', or longer - maybe 40+''. Also, do you prefer the newer rubber universal joints or the traditional mechanical hinged joints? Thanks.
