Go big!

You need to get one long enough so that you can hike out properly and comfortably at the beam of the boat. I have a Battlestick 48". Get a short one and you'll be stuck inboard and in the back of the cockpit where you shouldn't be.

I prefer the rubber universal joints. They work very well, are inexpensive, and easy to remove and replace.
