Teflon?

My centerboard also had/has a circular sheet of something that looks like mylar or teflon, about a foot across on either side of the CB. (actually it had 2 on one side and one on the other ... what's up with that?) Haven't seen mention of this anywhere. Does anyone know if this a PO mod, or did it come standard? Obvioulsy the intent is to prevent wear and/or provide less friction. Shims to tighten it up? They are pretty thin for that.
