There's a variation of the Carrick bend that is also neat and has as story behind it. Apparently it was the only knot allowed by the German commander in charge of the Zeppelins - everyone had to learn how to tie it blindfolded, in the rain, etc to keep the airships tethered.
It is very symmetrical, like the Carrick, and won't flog itself loose, like a sheet bend will occasionally.
