Robert,
After a little thought, I think it would be nice having a picture if you have time. Something about the previous setup on mine just doesn't seem right. Both lines will go from jam cleats on either side of the tiller, then across the bottom edges of the tiller to the sheaves mounted between the rudderplates. (It is the "across the edge" thing is what bothers me.) I would almost rather stagger the cleats a bit on the underside of the tiller like you mentioned and Tedd's picture shows (they won't fit side by side, which is a bad idea anyway). The downhaul sheave looks almost properly placed, but the uphaul sheave (they are side by side on the same mounting) looks like the line will not even touch it most of the time or even at all. (I will know more when I put it together again, epoxy paint is still curing on the rudder blade.) Something just doesn't seem right.
And, after some thought and the mention that the shock cord is on numerous uphauls, I wonder if this isn't more to protect the top transom mounting? Traveling with the rudder mounted on the boat for any distance (which I think is a bad idea anyway)and encountering endless bumps, could possible pry the mounting loose. The rudder is really heavy. Dunno, it all seems strange. I wonder if everyone has a downhaul on their rudders? ... and or shock cord on their uphauls. My was definately on the downhaul, but that might have been wrong.
Thanks, Gene
