A loose footed sail and a a bolt rope sail are cut differently! That's why they perform differently. I would consult with a good sailmaker before I did anything. But then again, I'd probably never do anything like this, since I'm a purist for this boat and believe that there's nothing wrong with the sail as it is and we should all try to maintain the original design and character.
