I also had thoughts about installing an asymmetic chute even though I gave the symmetric plenty of air time. Ultimately, I never did it because any of my considerations involved permanent changes to the boat which I thought unwise. I now sail a Johnson 18 which does have the asymmetrical set up. I am glad I never changed the Harpoon 5.2.
I do believe though that in principle an asymmetric chute would work very well and that as long as you fly the chute a couple of feet off the bow on a sprit, the standard Harpoon symmetric spinnaker fittings should work just fine.
If you go ahead with this set up, I would be curious to see how you set up the sprit. I would advise caution to making permanent changes to the one design of the boat as to ensure the long term value of your boat.
