I was NOT discussing stopping a moving boat AFTER its pointed into the wind. If the bow is pointed into the wind, I would be shocked if the boat moved very much at all, unless there was a current. A drogue won't contribute anything in that case! This is why I say turning the boat into the wind by swimming it around, ought to be sufficient.
Indeed, a drogue such as you describe does work great to slow a FAST moving boat.
My understanding is that Kinney feels that the boat moves on its side when perpendicular to the wind because the hull acts like a sail. That could be, but I feel this must be too slow for any drogue to have an impact.
This is my last comment on this subject. Promise. Whoever wants to carry a 5 gal bucket on their small boat just for this purpose, I say Mazel Tov!
