I recently acquired my first sailboat. I hadn't done any research into this acquisition beforehand, because this Harpoon 5.2 was given to me at no cost. After reading this forum of happy owners, I realize how lucky I am.
The hull is in good shape except for a ~2" semicircle crack in one spot. The wood is in pretty poor shape and I have plans to replace it. The deck has minimal cracking--some at the base of the centerboard. Also, I was using the forestay to pull myself onto the deck and, in doing so, pulled one the anchors (correct terminology?) for the shrouds out of its place, stripping the screw holes.
I have a few questions relating to these minor woes:
1. Should I repair that minor crack in the hull? If so, what's the best procedure?
2. For wood, is there an inexpensive alternative to teak?
3. Should I exhibit patience and resurface the deck before my first launch? Or can I get a witness who says I need to get out on the lake ASAP?
4. That anchor for the shroud has two screw holes on the base. Now that I've stripped the screw shafts out, should I search for a larger anchor with a different hole pattern? Or what else?
Your responses are greatly appreciated. Happy to be a part of this group.
