Ever had a hiking strap let loose underway ?

I did today..not fun.
Lost a pair of $300 prescription sunglasses and got a wicked rope burn from the main sheet. I managed to keep a hold of it and hauled my self back into the boat. I think the material I have is not well suited for straps. Its stuff I got from west marine - to much of a plastic feel to it. If anyone has pics of the routing for the webbing through the aluminum plates I would love to see them - as I want to confirm its set up right from here on out.
