Thanks for all your responses. The forum is great.
Jay - no fear of the wingnut spinning off? The nut on my boom has an integrated nylon lock washer.
Gene - I used that type of pin on the forestay of my 12' Jester (about the same speed as an O'Day Javelin), but I would be scared to use it on the Harpoon for the same purpose. I wonder about the forces on the boom during a jibe. I've seen the main sheet pull the blocks off the boom on a Highlander.
What I was hoping for - Highlanders have the gooseneck fixed to the mast, but the boom slides off a 5" x 3/4" pin on the gooseneck. Would have liked that sort of setup, it's quick (but nothing else on the Highlander is quick). The problem may be that the boom is held on by outhaul tension. The outhaul runs through the mast and under the deck to the gunwales. Would not have that ability with a Harpoon.
Don't really want to take the rivets out of the mast, so I guess I'll fool around with the wingnut and clevis pin, although I may hedge a little and use a clevis pin with a standard ring.
