Yesterday on the maiden voyage of our 1980's Harpoon 5.2 I discovered the plywood under the mast tabernacle has totally rotted away. The lag bolts each pulled out of the step as we sailed to shore in a 10 knot breeze. We fortunately made it back to the dock w/o dismasting the boat.
The glass under the the tabernacle became badly damaged as well as the glass underneath the plywood. I see another layer of undamaged wood under the remains of the mast step. I'm hoping to use this piece of wood to support the new mast step area. Could this be the top of the front end of the centerboard cavity?
Any advice from anyone that has rebuilt the top of the pedestal and mast step would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to install a 4" inspection port on the side of the pedestal to facilitate the rebuild but I fear it will intrude on the centerboard pivot point.
