Access To Mast Step

In Response To: rotten mast step (Bryan Page)

Bryan, I unbolted my tabernacle and cut out an access hole in the fiberglass. All of the wood was wet, disintegrated, and basically like wet dust. How it lasted without dis-masting till now, I have no idea. From what I could see, there are 2 half inch pieces of plywood. They were glued together, because I found the flat band of glue that was still intact even though the wood was no longer attached to it. I dug and scraped until I cleared it down to the top of the centerboard box. So I don't think there is any access from below. And everything that I've read on this forum is that that is quite involved to get out anyway.

I did reach some drier wood, but it was still not sturdy. I don't know whether to cut more fiberglass on the lower section of the top of the centerboard trunk or not. I have never done anything with fiberglass, but a guy I work with is going to come by and take a look at what I'm dealing with.

Let me know what you decide to do with your issue.

Stuart
