Howdy all, I just thought that you might like hearing that a Harpoon 5.2 completed the trip from Pt. Mansfield to Magnolia Beach in the inaugural Tx 200. I bought the boat in April in pretty rough condition - the mast was in 3 pieces and every bit of wood was shot. I replaced the wood, sleeved and welded the mast, repaired the mast step and made a spacer to compensate for the now 4" shorter mast(I'm still not entirely happy with this setup) and reconstructed the bailer openings. I also made a couple of mods such as adding cleats, tie downs, battery tray and topping lift. I also removed the perm. gooseneck and used one that slides in the boltrope groove and installed a motormount on the starboard side. Nearly the entire trip is made on the starboard tack. I got all this completed just in time for a test sail the weekend before the start. On june 7 I packed all my gear(way more than I needed as it turns out) and headed for P.M.. On June 9 I pulled out of the harbour in company with the fleet and headed N with winds in mid teens to low 20s and a pretty boisterous following sea. By after noon I was surfing in the land cut under reefed main and no jib hitting speeds over 9 mph in winds ranging from mid 20s to low 30s and nice smooth water. My mast step repairs were on my mind quite a bit during that run. We made camp just inside the N. end of the land cut on what turned out to be a mud beach. I jumped out into thigh deep stinking mud and my cheap croc knock offs became the first victim of the trip.As I rested ashore one of the later boats, a venture 23 whose skipper also owns a harpoon, arrived in company with a pod of dolphins that began making spectacular leaps into the air when he turned his bow to shore. The wind kept up, keeping things cool and bug free. I cooked something canned on the camp stove, made my bed in the cockpit and serenaded Graham Byrnes (designer of the core sound series and the way fast EC22) and family with my snoring. Tomorrow we continue across baffin bay, if anyone is interested.
