thwart seat and hiking straps

My harpon 5.2 does not have a thwart seat or hiking straps. Not sure it either are truly needed at this time in my sailing career since I am only two months into sailing but would like some suggestions. Can anyone tell me the true measurements of the thwart seat and/or how the hiking straps secure into the boat. PS: This is a great site and feedback has been quite helpful.
