Hi Bob,
And thanks for the plug John. Bob, I'll be happy to do all that I can to help you plan for your trip. Heck, if the timing works out,I'll probably figure out a way to meet you over in the Keys while you're there. I can snorkel then too... 'cause I have a wet suit! 70 degree water is pretty chilly for me now that I've been 'Floridaized'. I was closing windows this evening because the temperature in the house was all the way down to 75 and outside is suppose to get down around 60... yikes! My wife and I try to get to the Keys at least once or twice a year to do some sailing and snorkeling. This year we didn't get to the Keys because we went to Bimini with the Conch Cruisers and then had outboard issues for a couple of months. So we are looking forward to getting back there.
There is a chance that the Conch Cruisers may do a Keys trip this year, but it would most likely be 2 weeks in June. Anybody want to join us? You can go to our forum and click on the link and take a survey about when, where and how you would like the trip. http://mycyberbuddy.com/conchcruisers/forum/viewtopic.php?t=79
It's also possible that the West Coast Trailer Sailing Squadron (WCTSS) can be of some help. http://ftp.ij.net/wctss/wctss/ I've just met up with one of their members (turns out he lives 2 blocks from me) and it seems they do a lot of weekend type trips. But there are quite a few very experienced sailors and they may be able to provide help as well. Not many Macs but lots of very cool and unusual trailer sailors. And some of them are quite small.
Have you (or your brother) ever sailed the coast of Florida before? The Inter Coastal Waterway (ICW) can be a little tricky to newcomers. The Keys is more like any other coastal sailing. When it comes to sailing in the West Palm area, or any place from there down to Key Largo (where you get out of the ICW) I'd recommend having very good charts. We just sailed the ICW in Biscayne Bay (south of Miami) and there is some wide open water and some that looks wide open but if you get outside the ICW channel it can get real shallow real quick. Just be careful, pay attention, and you'll be fine.
Feel free to ask any questions you want. If you want, e-mail me directly at MRHandyRSL@hotmail.com
