Got one of my degrees at Arizona State (go Sundevils!). I didn't have a boat at that time so have little experience with the lakes around there. I do agree, however, if I had to pay a couple hundred dollars a month for a slip it wouldn't be worth it. My problem is I live in a HOA neighborhood that doesn't allow boats parked on your property so no matter what I do I will have to pay and the slip is only twice the cost of a parking space to store my boat on the hard. Hence the reason to go with the slip. However, I did discover many additional advantages as well.
