broken mast because of small slugs

Report: outside forum guidelines

There is a fellow named Greg on the "Ask a Mac owner" forum who had his mast break. Appears he had a new FX sail with small slugs. As he sailed away from the Florida shore heading to the Bahamas the slugs pulled out of the mast slot. Even though the winds were only 10 to 15 kts, the mast folded and came down. I noticed the new mainsail I bought last spring (not an FX sail) also had slugs smaller than my original sail used. What size slugs are others using on your Mac26C mainsail ? My original sail used 1/2" slugs, I'm not sure what the new sail has, I'll measure them early next week when I can get the sail out of storage. I'm still planning to head for the Florida Keys on the 15th of Jan. with my boat so I'm very concerned about this possible problem.
