Greg posted that the mast folded at the spreaders. I guess when the slugs pulled through the slot in the back of the mast all the force on the mainsail was now transfered to the top of the mast on the halyard, this caused the mast to fail at the spreaders. He does not mention if a genoa was flying at the time. I don't know if that would have helped or made it worse. I am surprised that 3/8" slugs could pull through the slot. He also mentioned the slugs were only 3/8" at the ends, this would really increase the pressure on the slot to a very small area. Once one of the slugs came out the adjacent slugs would have been subjected to much larger forces. I will probably change my slugs for new 1/2" jobs.
