Here is a response from another Mac board on this same subject:
Got a response back from BWY regarding cable wear block.
Since they are now the designated distributor and service provider for older Macs I wrote to them asking about the wear block. Here is Gail's response:
Frank, Items I have available for your keel are: Keel Cable $31 Keel Cable Bolt Kit $2 Keel Lock Bolt Kit $3.50 Keel Pivot Bolt Assembly $25 Keel Winch w/Handle $97 And any standing rigging and blocks.
Speaking with the owner, we found an old drawing of the wear plate and can have some put back into production. The manufacturer that has the patterns is out until Monday, so we'll call back to him then. Unsure of the timing though. Please stay in touch, say about 3 weeks and I'll know more when they are expected to arrive. Thanks, Gail
My response: Gail, Thanks for getting back so quickly. Judging from your response you think that the block should be replaced. Several questions have come up at our forum. Can the block just be reversed for another 25 years or is there some sort of insert that slows wearing on that side? What is the keel pivot bolt made of, stainless steel or regular steel? Is that the original material used when constructed? Some have questioned the wisdom of using SS where saltwater is in constant contact. Thanks again, Frank
So - someone get a different response than they gave you. I'd try again.
