(Pete) On of my favourite methods is to: 1. Tightly wind a turn of masking tape around where I wish to cut. 2. Lay the taped rope on a piece of wood. 3. Place a sharp blade perpendicular across the centre of the tape. 4. Sharply tap the back of the blade with a mallet to sever the rope. 5. Light, in turn, each end of the rope on fire until it starts to drip. 6. Blow out the flame and hold still until it cools. 7. Remove the remaining tape.
