interior fitment question

I'm interested in making something similar to what's in Phil's venture 21 pictured below. My question is, would I have to leave a gap between the inner fiberglass and the wood in case the fiberglass moves due to the pressure from the mast, or can it go right against it, OR would there need to be something to cushion it? Thanks!
