Thanks for all the input - I have merged it all together and and come up with: - 5 foot length, so I can go forward easily - 36 inch height allows mounting at rub rail and boom clearance (with bolt rope to spec) - 78 inch width keeps runoff outside cockpit - mounting on 2 foot sliders to maximize up/down location - mounting on hull/deck seam just inside rub rail gives maximum width and minimum cockpit intrusion
I'm still considering the adjustable rods over the traditional straps.
I am not thinking of a window anymore and will add my tiller extension instead. I asked the manufacturer (GMI Top Design) and they advised against a window. They had installed several in the past and asked for feedback from the owners. Most owners said the windows were too small regardless of size and it was easier to stick their head out or use a tiller extension! Leaking was not an issue as GMI uses a seam binding and thread that yields a waterproof joint.
But now I have another question. GMI says they are frequently asked to add zippers to the bimini for future sides, backs, etc.
Has anyone added material between the front of the bimini and the poptop? I am curious how well it worked and if there are any design suggestions.
We currently have a cover with aluminum rods that attaches at the corners and is hoisted with the main halyard. Works well but it takes time to erect plus most of it won't be needed with the bimini. You can see it in the attached pic.
