Larry, I launched at Wilson, NY at the state park. I had first considered Old Fort Niagara State Park on the Niagara River but they do not allow overnight parking.
It is 36 miles across the lake. We hit the water about 10am in early Sept and arrived at Marina Quay West at dusk. The wind diminished throughout the day and we had to motor half the distance. I wanted to reach the marina before dark. After we docked we walked up to King St. for dinner and drinks. We then retired to the cockpit to watch the boat traffic and look up at the CN Tower which was right overhead. Marina Quay West is right in front of the Music Garden.
The next day we left about 9am and after about 2hours of sailing turned on the motor as the wind completely died. It was a long motor across a glass-smooth Lake Ontario. We were back in Wilson and on the road by 6pm.
I'd like to do it again but I would take 3 days.
