Spreaders

I just purchased a Mac 23. One of the spreaders was broke at the mast end,and I made a new one . When I went to attach it I found out what broke the original. The cross bolt that went through the mast was a little long so when the previous owner folded them[when the mast was down the bolt tore one side of the spreaded out. My question is do they fold or do you let them extend out on each side while trailering? Thanks for any help. Jim
