It was an early model where they welded the cheek block all the way around it's edge. The lower edge weld was right on the highest stress portion of the rudder.
IDA corrected this some time ago (which might be why the cheek blocks seem to separate.
In any event they stand behind their product and replace without question. I would keep the IDA and either drill a pivot hole in the bottom (so you can flip it upside down if it breaks) or carry the original as backup.
A homemade rudder or the original won't come with their level of warranty or customer service!
