When I got my boat, it had been in salt water (a slip at Dana Point, CA). Barnacles all over the bottom - so a big bottom job. Even with a mask, I ended up tasting copper in my mouth for a week. For $300 I sure would let someone else do it - as long as you know it was being done correctly.
