Mine WERE the same on my 1992 26S trailer. Within the first year of ownership (last year) they have both broken at the bottom, right above where they "Y" out. Per the previous owner (original purchaser) they were as-delivered by McGregor.
The cause of the failure was corrosion. The uprights were wrapped in some type of rubbery material (now old and cracked) and failed at the bottom edge of the rubbery coating - totally expected result at such an interface. One of the first things I have done to save the rest of the uprights fixture is to drill small weep holes so standing water does not collect in the inside of these pipes. Good news is that the remainder of the metal (the triangle Y down to the trailer) is still plenty strong.
I had some good luck installing a roller on the angled pipe, until the roller itself failed. I still have some ideas ... we'll see. You never know what old' "Thrifty 26S" will come up with !!
As stated before, I typically drive (err ..... float) onto the trailer with about 10 inches of the swing centerboard out. Folds right up onto the trailer, and makes steering those last 50 feet so so much easier.
Fair winds .... be safe, Nelson Amen
