Those anchors always suck. However, there are certain characteristics you can look for in a knock off Danforth that may give it a greater chance of success. One is no open ring-shank anchors but something with a nice long closed shank. Another is the angle of the flukes from the shank. There is the size of the mud plate and the cross-arms. Looking at this doesn't guarantee finding a good knockoff but it will get you closer.
Keep in mind, I am not advocating knockoffs for coastal environments where you have to content with wind, tide, and waves but for lakes where the bottom lends itself to anchors holding (sometimes too well). I am definitely not going to leave my fortress hanging on my pulpit at the slip!
