I had bought the 10 year import permit ($50) and one year worth of on the water insurance ($120). We used the ramp at Marina San Carlos and spent a few days at Marina Singular in Santa Rosalia and nobody asked to see any paperwork. Big waste of money and I wouldn't get it again unless I were leaving my boat there while I went back to the states.
Saling Conditions: I sail at about 8,000 ft in Colorado so being able to do 35 miles on one tack was the coolest thing ever. To get weather info we would either ask other boaters or if in a town check weatherbouy.com. I felt like we were easily able to pick our battles and avoid the few big wind days that we encountered. One thing to remember is that wind from the N/NW will bring larger waves than any other direction. The most motoring we did was while we crossed the sea. Both ways we probably motored 35 miles and that was to get it done uickly not because of lack of wind. Most anchorages are less than 25 miles apart so if we were up early we could get a good chunk of it done before any strong afternoon winds rose. Sometimes we would go a day or two with out turning the motor on. We reefed and used our storm jib a few times. Most of our sailing was under great conditions.
Equipment: 22lb bruce anchor and 30 feet of chain was the best thing we brought. While other boats were on anchor watch we were able to sleep with warm fuzzy feelings knowing our boat wasn't going anywhere. I had a hand held GPS and a fancier Humminbird unit that had a display map. Upon turning it on for the first time it put us 1/2 mile inland. Navigation is really easy and as long as you watched your depth finder it's a no brainer. We carried 15 gallons of fuel and had plenty between Pemex stations. We had about 20 gallons of water and that was plenty in between stops.
All of our the anchorages were great but we didn't really care for Santa Rosalia or Punta pulpito. I would highly suggest getting the new guide that came out last year. It's spot on and easy to follow.
While we were sailing I stored my truck and trailer with Miguel Colmenares. He is a great guy who has a fenced in and partially covered storage. He charged me $40 for one month. The marina wanted $120. His email is migtorito@hotmail.com or (622) 107-3481.
