"X" has more standing headroom, probably a better interior arrangement (IMHO - but yours may vary), better cockpit.
"M" is the better sailing vessel, and can have more power for motoring, but not sure how much real performance you get from that greater power. "M" has a better sailing shape and a more efficient rig.
Both boats are a compromise, so the capability to do both does put some limits on how well it does either.
We are enough of the "sailing purist" mindset that we went with the older "S" model because it is a better sailboat. However, it just is NOT a powerboat, and there are occasions where I wish I had that capability.
If I were going to get an "X" or "M", and that still might happen one of these days, I'd go with the "X" only because I think it is the better compromise or "do it both" boat, at least for the kinds of things we want to do.
Of course, "X's" will also be less expensive, primarily because they are the older boats of the two.
