First things first... mine (and MrBill's I think) is a Wheems and Plath (?) lamp (pricey, with serial # and all)...just so we're not talking apples and oranges...or lesser copies. Second....only fill with the BEST (purest) lamp oil on the shelf...I breathe the air in the same small space as this thing is burning. Third...it ain't a spotlight, trying to make the thing make more light by turning the wick higher will just make more smoke, not more light. I dunno, love mine. Cheers, F
