We have a Weems & Plath. Two things cause smoke... (Sam Hunter, '93 Mac26S, Atlanta & Pensacola) the lamp takes the chill off the boat too. maybe 10 degrees increase. (55->65) I had used a small propane lantern for a while, and that was much brighter. but I can carry a weeks supply of oil a lot easier than propane. love the WP lamps. and yes to low wick... a cool thing is I can lower wick almost completly and its still lit in the morning. (its somewhat a pain to light it).
