Thanks for the heads up about 10W30, no haven't tried that yet. I just now retrieved my lamp and oil from the basement and I was using Weems & Plath Lamp Fuel, Clean Burning Liquid Parafin. Smokes worse than 10W30. Perhaps my problem is the lamp. I got it as a gift from my brother, who got it as a safety award. So it is a W&P look alike, no wick adjustment, and perhaps other problems. It says it's a Authentic Sailing Gear Type SL Safety Lamps 1871, NY, NY.
Looking at the lamp, I think I may have tightened the bottom tank and wick assembly too tight, not allowing air into the bottom. If that works, I will let you know.
Has anyone used a lamp like this as a anchor light? The Pardy's mention it in their book.
