If you put in lazarette flooring, then the front of the lazarette becomes the obvious choice. That space becomes virtually unused, and the trasponder is protected (not that it needs much protection).

If no floor, place it at the rear of the laz, so that things tend to go downhill, away from it.

I put mine in a glob of thickened epoxy, and it worked fine.

When I had to replace the whole fishfinder, I ended up trying (experimenting) with a transom-mount. It is OK, but frankly, has not worked as well as the one that was pasted in the laz. (Of course, I do NOT know if that is because this new one is simply a very cheap unit.)
